Procrastination is a psychological and behavioral phenomenon where individuals choose to postpone important activities or decisions, often in favor of more immediate and less important tasks. The tendency towards procrastination is widespread among many of us and reflects our inherent inclination to prioritize short-term needs over long-term ones.
However, procrastination encompasses more than simply delaying and putting off crucial tasks. Its roots can be traced back to the ancient Greek term ‘Akrasia’, which refers to the state of acting in contradiction to one’s own better judgment or failing to align one’s actions with personal goals and values.
In face of the climate crisis, our inclination to procrastinate has become alarmingly evident, and the consequences of doing so extend far beyond ourselves. The impact of our procrastination is no longer only about self-harm; it also affects the planet, our civilization, and the well-being of future generations.
The planning and building industries have a major impact on climate change. As professionals within these industries, the impendent sustainable transition will require us to completely rethink the way we plan, design and construct our buildings and cities. This gigantic effort will require all of our collective creativity, skill and hard work.
So, let us embrace the challenge before us. Let us rise above procrastination and take the necessary action to ensure the preservation of our planet. The time for inaction is over—now is the time for us to make a difference.
Climate Change is our biggest trouble – let’s make it our biggest topic!
