Navigating Uncertainty – Hope through Action

At a time marked by geopolitical unrest, unstable supply chains and changing requirements, the construction industry is facing a new reality in which decisions must be made on increasingly uncertain ground. The climate is changing rapidly, and there is growing concern about planetary tipping points that could accelerate these developments. The EU is introducing new regulation and documentation requirements, but the direction is not stable. Some initiatives are postponed or revised as other priorities take precedence. At the same time, biodiversity is under pressure and global ecosystems are becoming increasingly unstable.
The construction industry amid rising tensions
There is no shortage of uncertainty, and we cannot remove it. But uncertainty must not become a barrier to the green transition. Instead, it should be used as a starting point for action and new solutions. This is the starting point when Building Green CPH opens its doors at Lokomotivværkstedet in Copenhagen on 28-29 October under this year’s theme: “Navigating Uncertainty – Hope Through Action”.

The construction industry is closely connected to global change, and uncertainty is playing an increasingly significant role – both in day-to-day practice and in strategic decision-making. Around 40% of global CO₂ emissions come from buildings and construction, and the sector is responsible for substantial material consumption. At the same time, the industry is characterised by long planning horizons, major investments and a high dependence on global economic conditions.
Hope Through Action
With this year’s theme, Building Green aims both to acknowledge the reality facing the industry and to show how uncertainty can be used constructively in the transition already under way. Through positive action and conscious choices, we can create hope for a better and more sustainable industry.

For example, the industry can choose to see opportunities rather than risks:

– Stricter climate and documentation requirements can create opportunities to develop more and better low-emission materials, or to work more ambitiously with the buildings that already exist.

– Global geopolitical uncertainty and rising prices can provide an incentive to work more strategically with local resources, circular material flows and regional production.

– The biodiversity crisis and increasing pressure on land can be a starting point for improving the integration of nature-based solutions and working with regenerative principles.

– Unclear political frameworks and a changing regulatory landscape call for the development of more robust long-term strategies and new forms of collaboration.

By changing our perspective, seeing opportunities in the challenges and insisting on making sound choices that have a genuinely positive impact, we can create hope that the industry can transition towards operating in harmony with the planet and its resources, rather than at their expense.

Building Green CPH

Building Green CPH is where the industry comes together to understand the changes shaping the future of the built environment. It is where knowledge and experience are shared across the value chain, and where new solutions, forms of collaboration and perspectives can be explored.

Join us and be part of shaping the future of the built environment.
