About Session

If we want to lower the CO2 emissions of new construction, we need to drastically reduce the amount of new material used in the structural frame as it can account for up to 80% of a building’s embodied carbon. Reuse of structural elements is an important strategy to enable that which has been in focus of the StructuralReuse project.

You will hear how non-destructive testing can support the assessment of structural timber for reuse. After a short introduction to the guideline DS INF 672, developed in the StructuralReuse project, you will join a hands-on workshop using a simple smartphone app to test vibrations and estimate the mechanical properties of timber beams. The session highlights how simple test methods and clear guidelines can enable the reuse of structural elements.
